Spread Joy!
Are you a singer? I am. Yesterday, as I was walking my two German Short Hair Pointer granddogs, I started singing carols. I love to sing and grew up singing many songs at Christmas so the words are etched in my brain. I felt that Bridget and Piper liked hearing my voice (even though it may not be completely on key!) Singing makes me happy. When I lived in Vermont, we would go caroling in our tiny village of East Corinth. Neighbors knew when we were scheduled to arrive and had treats ready as a thank you. When I’m hiking or biking and think I can’t go on, sometimes I sing. It distracts me and changes the energy enough so I get up the next hill. Making joyful noise is good for the heart. Share audible joy.
Do you like to cook/bake? Holiday baking is a staple in our house. Nut rolls, breakfast bread, and gingerbread are must-haves and help make the days merry and bright. I’ve sent nut rolls to various people over the years and many look forward to them with gusto. I sleep well the day I finish the nut rolls. They’re a two-day event and are worth every minute. Share what you love with others. People don’t remember what you said, they remember how they felt when they were around you. Spread edible joy.
When was the last time you went sled riding or built a snowman? Sorry, I’ve lived in cold country for most of my life. One year I used sledding as a form of exercise. I’d hike up to the top of the hill next to our barn and slide down enough times to make a path. It got slippery and fast by the tenth time. Abbey, our standard poodle would chase me down the hill. The best part is lying on your back looking up at the sky. Sometimes it’s sunny and beautiful. Other times it’s really fun when it’s snowing and the flakes land on your tongue. I’d pet Abbey and we’d both be laughing. The attached picture below is of snow people that neighbors built at the park at the end of our street. Are they cute or what? Feel the joy of movement.
Do you like to garden? I left many beautiful gardens on our property that we owned in Vermont. There are three horse-trough gardens in my backyard here in Montana that are overflowing in the summer. The rest of the year, I suffice with house plants. We brought in the succulents that were growing outside all summer. I wouldn’t say they’re thriving and yet the plants are a welcome spot of color. I planted amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs and plan to give these as presents. Share natural joy.
As we approach the darkest day of the year, I highly encourage you to get out in nature. Go for a walk, snowshoe, hike, jog, ski, run, swim, or surfboard ride. Allow Mother Nature to be your partner in this dark time of year. Whether it’s singing, baking or cooking, being caught up in nature, gardening, spread your version of joy with yourself and others.
